I appreciate you sharing, but there are already other threads about this. Thanks for thinking of us though.

We all are. No one knows for sure. They may just can it, leaving those with the leak alone and those with 1.5 in no-man's-land. Either make the jump, or stay on 1.5.

Most of us have moved on, though. Since this is the first smartphone for most of us, it's good we had a learning experience similar to this and know what to look for next time e.g. not a rehash of a Sprint phone that was already out for months prior to this new one's release.

how long do you think you would have to wait after end of life began to get whatever phone will be replacing the eris should your eris fail during warranty or if u have insurance be damaged etc ?

I really don't wanna think that if i'm 1.5 years into my contract, and the eris NEVER gets a 2.1 update that if it fails or breaks that i'm gonna get sent some NOS or refurb unit.

Pretty sure they will keep sending refurbs warranty replacements for sometime. 1.5 years from now though who knows. They might allow and early renewal.

I dont understand why people are SO surprised that the Eris is end of life.

    1. The Eris is a 2.5 YEAR old phone. It uses very old CPU and chipset hardware from years ago.
    2. HTC simply created the Eris to dump excess obsolete MSM7600 SOC chips. This is why your Eris is so slow and lags so much.

It really is funny how companies take advantage of the general public who are not in the known.

Sorry folks, I have been saying this since the Eris was out. You bought an 2.5 year old phone with obsolete CPU chipset hardware and now you surprised that its discontinued???

Its discontinued because they were finally able to get rid of the old obsolete MSM7600 CPU SOC chips. These companies are not stupid....

Both HTC and Verizon scored well on the Eris and only the general public lost out. Why?

    1. HTC dumped thier excess MSM7600 chips
    2. Verizon got alot of customers locked in new contracts.
    3. General public lost out because they are now stuck with an obsolete phone and locked into a contract with no phone upgrade available anymore.

HTC has planned this out VERY well. Dump the old chips and launch the new snapdragon based phones right afterwards. Not only will people have paid (in one way or another) for the obsolete phones but they will probably buy the new snapdragon based units as well once they are released. Its a win win for HTC, again, they are not stupid.

  8. Two websites bear the above out (great post, by the way):

Qualcomm MSM7600 - CPUlist | PDAdb.net - Comprehensive Database of PDA, PDA Phone, Smartphone, PNA & Mobile Device Specifications

PDAmaster | PDAdb.net - Comprehensive Database of PDA, PDA Phone, Smartphone, PNA & Mobile Device Specifications

My only question about it is the 133 MHz ARM9 mentioned at the first site.

It's at it's EOL for VZW not HTC. The Eris will probably not completely go away, then again maybe it will and we will all have a collectors item.

You are absofreaking kidding me! I am trying to be patient about the number of posts on this subject...

As an aside, thanks for the chip info ArtificialSweetner. Good stuff to ponder over.

They will still have replacement Eris' throughout your warranty period...I can almost guarantee it.

EOL for sales is NOT EOL for support.
  12. "Support" at Verizon, lol... oh, you mean HTC updates.

    .. er, lol again. ;)

I dont get what the big deal is even if it is EOL.
WHo cares. No one keeps Their phone for more than 2 years... sometimes not even that long.
And how is it obsolete? It's a great phone as is... even with 1.5.
What was everyone expecting when they purchased this phone?

Regardless of wether it has new chips, old chips... everyone of us liked the phone when we got it. Deal with it.

It's like buying a car and then complaining that you had no idea it used up so much fuel. Car still looks good right?

  14. Wow, "sheesh" in upper case, and an exclamation point.

So, you do care about something, quite strongly. ;)

Meanwhile, those expressing concerns about the Eris EOL probably feel cheated in some way (I don't feel that way). All EOL really means is fewer and fewer new users of that particular device coming into the forums, I suppose.

The form factor is the most compelling reason to own an Eris IMHO. As long as we have root, we can upgrade. My wife's Dare was EOL'ed a while ago, yet it just got a firmware update from VZW last month. I think that the Eris will continue on for a long time... especially with community support.
  16. Community support is what I love about these forums.

Jeez, I guess I'd better get rid of my house, cars, one of my motorcycles, TV, mobile phone, some of my computers, a few of my cameras (film and digital), kitchen appliances, my piano and a whole lot of other things, 'cause there's something newer and better on the market to replace all of them.

Did you know that the best-selling CPU in history is the Zilog Z80, which has been in continuous production since 1976? By all of your measures, the Z80 should have been dead and buried by 1988, but it's still being designed into products because it gets the job done.

Unless Verizon is planning to disable every Eris on the EOL date, there's no reason to call them obsolete. They'll still make phone calls and run the same stuff they ran six months ago. If you're out to score nerd points by showing off the fact that you keep running out to spend your money on the latest version of a gadget, that's perfectly acceptable. Just don't expect many of us to fall all over ourselves to be awed by it.

1.) as part of your list of things that are obsolete and theres better version of on the market, you left out wife and kids. also, if you wanna toss the motorcycle and replace it with a new one, id be more than happy to take it off your hands.

2.) i don't know what eris you have, but its one of the worst PHONES ever. the worst part of this mobile device is the phone part, and im pretty sure most people agree. granted, i think most of us bought it for a text-email-navigate-websurf-app-laptop, not a phone, but still...the phone part sucks. even with leak 2.1v2, its started to glitch on me in the last few days and only receives one or two calls before i can't hear anything when trying to make a call and have to reboot.

maybe these leaks were VZW's and HTC's way of forcing us to buy new phones at the Eris's EOL....release leak, people run and put it on their phones, then at a predetermined date the leaks start to glitch until the phone is basically a paperweight with a pretty colored screen.
  21. You've got quite an imagination.

its more like buying a pontiac before the whole stock market thing and then 6 months later finding out they aren't being made anymore. except to me this is worse because why would htc want to spend money on a phone which isn't being sold anymore? they might have a few more updates but i am very doubtful about the full 2.1 update ever coming. I am disappointed but not surprised i have never liked htc until i got my eris and now i again dislike htc, probably the last htc i will ever buy.

Some of you asked why the Eris is obsolete, well ill tell you why.......because its RIDICULOUSLY sloooooow. The lag it produces is frustrating. The keyboard is so slow, music player is so slow, web broswing is slow, its just a very slow phone right from the beginning due to obsolete CPU chipset.

It's like going to a store and buying a 10 year old laptop. It's the exact same situation with the Eris.

Further more the CPU chipset is so obsolete that you get the worst of the worst in performance and battery life. With the eris you get horrid performance AND horrid battery life. This is due to the obsolete 90nm process the cpu chipset is Mfred on.

  24. That analogy is hyperbole, I'm hoping, because it is just way, way inaccurate.

This Eris I have right here on 1.5 is quick to function in any task I put to it. My old laptop machines are not.

Lag in the Eris.. in my Eris, is caused by lack of maintenance; deleting old texts, clearing caches, etc speeds it back up to snuff.

You're exaggerating, to say the least, and that is too bad because there is merit in your informative post up there earlier (how did a 2.5 year-old chipset suddenly become a 10 year-old device?).

I love how i feel like i can just read the sarcasm from your post

oh and your posts from earlier above(STOP INSTIGATING LOLZ JK)

but when i read the post i was like you just said it was 2.5 years old but now it's a 10 year old device? That's an exaggeration....
