Calendar App Won't Accept Custom Ringtone

I have a new Verizon S3. I put some mp3 ringtones in the phone and have set custom ringtones for everything. It works fine for everything except the stock calendar app. The calendar app will only play the stock ringtones. In the settings I can see and preview all the custom ringtones but if I choose one, once I back out of the settings, Calendar won't save the change and it will revert to a stock ringtone; "on time".

Anybody else have this glitch? Anybody have a fix?

I haven't had this issue myself but have helped many members with this. Sometimes the stock tone picker flakes out. You can get a free app called "Tone Picker" from the Play store and use that to select the tone. This usually fixes it.

Thanks. I installed Tone Picker but I'm not sure how to use it to set the ringtone for just the Calendar app. I think I ended up setting the global ringtone defaults. That didn't solve the problem, the Calendar ringtone would still only play the stock ringtone. Am I not using Tone Picker correctly?

I'm curious, when you say, "I haven't had this issue myself..." do you mean that you can successfully set a custom ringtone for the Calendar app?

I called Samsung and the tech was stumped. He recreated the problem on his S3, but could offer no fix.

I had the exact same problem and called Samsung also. The first tech couldn't fix it so I was bumped to the next level. He said it was not possible to use your own tone.

I created a similar thread a week or two ago, and was advised to download Calendar Event Reminder from the app store. I did, and it is great. Not only can you use any custom sound, but it's much louder and you can set many useful parameters. It will do just what you want, and more.

Go into Calendar | Settings | General Settings | Choose ringtone. This should laund a prompt asking you what which tone picker you want to use, choose the one you got from the market. This should fix the problem. BTW, the steps are similar for other apps like GMail, Messaging, etc.

Tone Picker doesn't work with the Calendar app, at least not on my S3. Going into Settings/Ringtone just gives me the same stock app ringtone choice menu. Tone Picker works with the other apps like you mentioned, just not with the Calendar app.

Give Zedge a try, it is a little more than a tone picker (it has millions of ringtones you can download for free) but it will also allow you to choose tones and it popped up on mine when I verified the steps I posted above. Its free too and I have been using it for years.

Zedge doesn't work with my Calendar app either. I'm wondering if you have a different version of the S3 Calendar app that I do. My steps are different than yours:

    Calendar/Settings/Select ringtone

Sorry, I'm using the stock Google calendar on Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Jellybean, but I have never seen an app that didn't prompt for a tone picker if there was more than one.:banghead:

I'll dig a little deeper and maybe call in some reserves.

Thanks. The lack of custom ringtone for the Calendar is only a minor annoyance, to me not really worth paying $ for Calendar Event Reminder. Let me know if you find a free fix.

Will do, just did a google search and it seems to be an unresolved issue unique to the S3.

It's possible to set custom notification for the calendar, you need to be rooted though. You need to convert the sound file into a .ogg file and then using root explorer or similar free app such as es file explorer or ghost commander put the file in system/media/audio/notifications and then reboot. Now when you go to the calendar the custom ringtone will be in the list of tones to choose

I done a lot of stuff to root, but seriously, you need to root to change a ringtone?:motz:

Just kidding, thanks for helping out.

  14. This path worked for me. I used Audacity to export ogg to Dropbox. Used Dropbox on the device to export to SD card. Then use ES File Explorer with Root Explorer enabled to copy the ogg from the SD card and paste in /system/media/audio/notifications

At this point you can see and select the new notification in the calendar app, but it won't "stick". In order to use it you have to reboot and then select it.

I've got sdcard notifications working with very little hassle.

I noticed actually that tones I put in /sdcard/media/audio/notifications were not showing up in Settings > Sound > Default Notifications.

I simply put the tones I want there, with E strongs file explorer then opened the files with E strongs (media player) then it showed up and was selectable in settings AND S planner, just as it should be picked up in any "notifications" folder.

I just had to play the tome first to "catalogue" it.

now that lightflow is working 100% with (rooted) S3, I'm able to set up the calendar notification with whatever sound and whatever color notification light I want.

    Lightflow = Boss.

I had that once, but I ran fix permissions in CWM and it works for me now.

Just uncovered the same bug. Must be an issue with the phone that the calendar won't use a custom ringtone. Not fixed in the OTA today.

I had this issue when I first got my SGS3. I tried copying the MP3 from my PC to the phone via the USB connection. The SGS3 was mounted as a removable USB storage device.

I used Windows File Explorer to copy the MP3's across. What I noticed is when I did this, it asked me if I wanted to do some type of conversion. I initially said yes to this. These sound files could no be set as notifications on my calendar. I found that none of the files I copied across could be set as notifications for my calendar. Only those notification sounds already on the phone to begin with can be set as a calendar notification.

The way I resolved this issue was to copy these files again, but this time chose No to converting the files. When I did this, I was able to use the custom sound files as notifications.

Thanks Stuntman. Your trick worked with the stock calender app. Just to confirm that I have placed the .MP3 file in the Notifications folder.

We have 2 S3's and they both do this. It sucks. Not sure I understand the fix here (if there is one) and not sure what rooting is? I have heard of it but never have done it. I had the S2 and it did not do this. I can go to settings from the calendar and see the ringtones from Zedge I downloaded and I can select it and exit but I go back in at it does not stick.

Can anyone explain in a bit more simple terms if there is a fix for this?

    Thanks!!!

Please, see my post #22 just 2 above yours. You don't need to root. For whatever reason, my PC asks if I want to do some conversion when copying the sound files to my phone. Just say no to this and ignore the warning.
