Are they correctly listed in the 'contacts' list?

If they are, one possibility is that the phone number is listed twice in your phonebook, for 2 different contacts and so the phone gets confused which one to display. Check all the display options to make sure you don't have duplicate contacts in your phone book

I am assuming that the caller's number appears when you receive a call, not their name.

Unless you mean that you cannot see the caller's contact details in your contacts phonebook? In which case, they are probably in a group that is not being displayed (because of the menu option)

Seems odd that the name appears when a text is received, but not when a phone call is.

Wild guess: perhaps the formatting of the phone number is incorrect in some way? missing area code, special characters?

Try deleting a contact and making a new one for a friend and have them try to both call/text you and see what happens.

I did exactly that and for a new contact its all fine :)..
But the imported set of contacts its rather behaving strangely.

    Cheers!!!

I am going to guess that the formatting of the phone number is a bit wrong then. Maybe it has a character in there that the phone application doesn't recognise as a valid number: space, () or -

Odd that the messaging app does, though. Perhaps it is less fussy about what constitutes a valid number
