Help Can I update to Froyo or Gingerbread without rooting?

If you use yogi4's tutorial in the" all things root " sub forum you will be able to install a custom recovery and any Gingerbread ROM you want. This tutorial is all about how to use ROMTools, that will allow you to do those things mentioned, but, it will use a temporary root that goes away at the first reboot. This tutorial is very informative and designed specifically for new members that don't know a thing about how to do the things mentioned. Using this tutorial is easy and is spelled out so well that you should not be able to mess anything up.

As Andy said,
I used Yogi4s write up and it worked flawless.
if you thinking about rooting, this the way to go.
just make sure to do your homework.
ROMTools does not establish a full root. Please never use the ROOT selection on SuperOneClick as this will mess up your phone. With the "V" you have to use the Shell Root selection and the push su and Busybox with a command prompt(or you could use a terminal emulator). This method of establishing a full root will only work on the "V"s with the 2.2.1 OS.
If you have a 2.2.2 OS then you will have to use the Gingerbreak.apk found in the "Rooting with out a computer" tutorial.
