I have a Verizon LG Ally phone.
Going to Italy next month. The phone isn't an international phone, so I can't use it as a cell phone to call the USA.
Can I setup Skype to call cellphones and landlines in the USA?
I will have wifi access at the hotel, and various hotspots in Rome.
If yes, can you tell me how I can set that up before I leave?
Do I have to pay Skype for that service? By the week or month?
Can I pay for just a week or a month?
    Don't know much about Skype.

    Thanks for your help.

I use Skype to call the US from abroad. It works well, as long as your connection to the internet is good. I just deposit a few dollars in the account. How much you deposit will depend on how much you want to use it. Check the per minute rates and decide.

Note: If you leave the Skype app running, it can use a lot of battery / mobile data, so I suggest only opening it when you need to make a call (unless you plan to receive calls over Skype as well, in which case you'd need to leave it open).

Skype To Skype is Free to call/video call
While Skype to Phones will cost you some bucks
You can choose between pay per minute and pay per month.

    Hope This helps :) :)

Just feed $10 to Skype and you'll have enough to call many hours. Take note that Skype has become much more expensive than competitors (for example Yahoo, maybe Tango or something like that), but keep crushing them because of their reputation. Also, they hide their hike in price by putting a tax on the first minute, so the price per minute, which is what you look at, isn't very different. But it's still ok, compared to calling directly from a phone...

Simply sign up with them for $10 with a credit card. When your balance gets below a certain point, they'll charge another $10 on your card.

I've had $11+ on my account since the last time I used Skype over WiFi in Europe to call the US a few years ago. Between free mobile to mobile on my phone and free US and Canada calls through Google on my PC, I haven't used it at all.

Every 18 months or so, Skype emails me to tell me that my account will be deleted (and I'll lose my money) if I don't use it. So I make a one or two minute call to someone and go about my business.

Yeah but of course you don't have to let Skype take more money when you're credit is down to 2 dollars (or euros), you can turn that of in the settings.

If you have a Google Voice number you can use Groove IP with Google Voice and it's free and I think the quality is better than Skype.
