I browsed the forums here and downloaded a few driver update checkers and couldn't get those to work. I installed kies and it will not even recognize my captivate and i get a notification from windows saying driver installation failed. I uninstalled all the driver programs except kies and sometimes kies will recognize the captivate when i plug it in, only in mass storage mode. when in kies mode, it doesn't recognize it at all. USB debugging is on and i am running windows 7 64 bit ultimate
    What am i missing here?

Well Kies is not supported in the US market, which would include the Captivate, so that could be part of the problem.

I had the same problem for weeks, and I also have Windows 7. Yesterday, I came across this (see link), and it fixed everything. I was astounded. If you do EXACTLY what the video shows you, you'll have no problems at all.

You may have tried this, but.... Turn off your phone and remove the external SD card if you have one. Turn phone back on and try it. This worked on mine. There was some sort of conflict between Kies and the card.

My one problem is that this only works when debugging is disabled. I may put on 2.2 and this requires debugging enabled. What is wrong?

I got it to work without doing anything special on Win7 64.
