Root can not make nandroid backup

i have achieved rooting of my sprint hero cdma phone, but can not get to nandroid backup. i attempted to recovery reboot and it freezes at the htc screen, multiple times. i did luckily backup everything from my sd card and my apps/data before i did anything so i can get back to basics at least with root. i have formatted my sd card, and replaced it with everything that was on there directly after rooting. i can do a speedboot and see the menu to do the backup option, but i get the same results. anyone got advice for a rookie?
