Plug the external drive into the computer. It'll appear as one more drive on the computer. Download to that drive. If the phone is OTG-capable, and you can get an OTG cable with power connector, and a power source for the external drive, you could do it that way, but that's driving west from LA to get to New York. It's much easier to just plug the drive into a computer.
