If you're a loyal (perhaps more than 1 year?) customer with Bell, you might be receiving a 50$ gift card in the mail which goes towards a new activation on a 3 year contract of any superphone, smartphone or blackberry. Expires Dec 18.

Just got a gift card in the mail!

    Cheers,

just confirmed with virgin, you can get a talk and text plan with the gn when you buy outright. so the minimum cost of the 30 day commitment when buying outright is $20 (the cheapest talk and text plan).

Really? Locked? Shouldn't be AFAIK. Either way, $75 is madness, there is usually some unlockers on ebay who will get you a code for $20 or less. But like I said, I don't see why it would be locked to begin with.

    He's Lying.

Or like so many other service reps, he doesn't have a clue about what he's a talking about.

If you want to have some fun, once the GN is released go to a virgin mob kiosk, ask to see a GN handset, turn it off, slip in your Non-Bell/Non-Virgin working SIM into the back of it, turn it on, then laugh in his/her face.

    Again for the 47th time......

Like all Google Developer Smartphones (aka Nexus Phones) because they are the flagship android app development platform they are ONLY sold SIM unlocked and with a unlockable bootloader.

Google does this so that if you were or wanted to become an app developer you can easily have the hardware upon which to build/test your apps.

Next time a Bell/Virgin Mob rep says otherwise you have my permission to bitch slap him/her in front of their mom.

when it comes to rooting or creating a backup of the stock device or even using a stock image/file found online through the links provided in the All things Root section, are the procedures/steps the same for our Canadian version phones?

this may seem obvious but im new to android and want to be sure if i can follow the same steps or use the same stock images found in that thread(as it's mostly UK and USA users), or if ours would be a bit different due to diff model/carrier type and i would have to create my own stock image when i first get the phone or possibly follow different steps to access root.

I know i read that some things are different even depending on carrier model as some ppl were talking specifics about VZW versions and then other versions, so will that also apply for bell/rogers versions?

As far as I am aware, it is exactly like the UK version and there should be no carrier imprinting in any fashion. The Verizon edition not withstanding, I'd be very worried if the Canadian version differed as it would mark the end of the "Nexus" experienced as we know it.

That said, you'll need to wait till release of the Canadian-sold devices to be 100% sure.

I wen't into a Virgin store on Saturday, and the rep told me that I could buy the GN on a 3-year contract for $159, and then cancel the contract and pay the fee of $400 and that it would be cheaper than buying the phone outright. I said sure, awesome, and he signed me up for the waiting list and told me to come back on release (Thursday). So if what he's said is true, and I'm not going to go back to find some catches and tricks (I have a feeling I will), then I'll be able to get the phone for $159+tax plus the $400 cancellation = $579. Think it sounds too good to be true? yeah, me too. I'll find out on Thursday.

ps. I read that the max cancellation fee on a voice plan is $400 and the max on a data plan is $200, and that you have to have voice and data to get the subsidy price ($159), so they might try and slam me with both, although the rep told me price of phone plus $400 cancellation fee, so I'm going to hold it against them if I can.

    Any insight?

Good luck I guess. Unless you read it in the contract, rep could tell you you get a free unicorn if you cancel. But it don't mean squat unless the contract has it written in.

interesting. I read your post and that got me researching. Here's what i found.

Unfortunately I think you will be slapped with the data cancellation fee which is $250 according to this:

    http://www.virginmobile.ca/assets/en/pdf/MembershipForm-ENNov3.pdf

Virgin subsidizes $500 on 3 year contracts when you get a voice + data plan (smartphone plan). Thus the advertised $159 on a three year term assuming you're getting a smartphone plan. If you wanted to skip the data plan and go with a talk and text plan, you wouldn't have to pay the data cancellation fee but virgin would only subsidize $200 for a talk and text plan so your phone would cost $450 instead of $159. either way, you're not getting it cheaper than the outright cost.

    Outright: $650
    No data plan: $650 phone - 200 subsidy + 400 voice cancel = $850
    With data plan: $650 phone - 500 subsidy + 400 voice cancel + 250 data cancel = $800

I could still be wrong but that's what i found. Let us know how it goes.

They're lying, but don't take my word for it. Drop in a Non-Bell/Virgin SIM on Thursday (I plan too) and find out for yourself.

    Cheers.

How are you guys ordering this from Bell? Do you need to do it over the phone? I don't see a way online to buy off-contract...

FYI the results of my chat with a Bell representative:

Sandy: Hello, thanks for visiting bell.ca. How can I help you today?
You: Hi, I'd like to order the galaxy nexus to ship to me in the US but I don't want a service contract. Can you help me?
Sandy: I am sorry, you can buy this phone only with 3 years term.
Sandy: It can be shipped only within Canada.
Sandy: You need a canadian credit card and address to order it.
    You: Why?
Sandy: Yes, it is for credit check.
Sandy: If you order online, you will be done with credit check.
You: can canadian customers buy it without a service contract?
Sandy: Yes,. However they need to buy it in Bell store.
You: and it is $649 correct?
    Sandy: Yes.
    Sandy: You are right
    You: thanks
    Sandy: Welcome
Sandy: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
    You: no

I'm with Rogers right now and want this phone ASAP. Do I have to actually wait until Rogers gets it in january or can I just get a Bell/Telus or maybe even a US version of the phone and have it work on Rogers 3G?

I did some contacting around Samsung today and I prodded to try and get any and all information about a possible 32-GB version. Seeing that they recently updated their website and removed the SDcard removal storage that was previously listed, etc.

I got to someone in their Social Hub department and they said they do not have any information on 32GB model but that there was a phone coming to Bell and Rogers soon under the moniker of "Samsung Galaxy Nexus S". I did a double take and asked him if he meant the already released Galaxy S or Nexus S and he said no. He said it should be coming within the next couple of weeks.

Could be a mistake, could be a revision. Who knows.

I'm more inclined to think that 16GB GSM is all we are getting, unless the above mentioned forthcoming phone does infact exist under the radar.
