Cannot remove icon

I have a circle with a line through it at the top of my screen where the aeroplane mode would appear. How do I remove it?

Long-press it. Let go and you'll get a little menu. Remove it.

The circle with a minus sign indicates that your phone is in silent mode and you have one or more alarms set using your alarm clock. The icon indicates that alarms will sound even though your phone is silenced.

Un-silence your phone (turn on the ringer) to make the icon disappear.

The icon is new in Android version 6.0 (Marshmallow).

Oops! My mistake. It showed up for me after installation of 6.0. That fooled me.
