Help Can't factory reset

I've tried both ways. Settings, privacy, reset.

Home plus power button while the phone is off.

(Sd card is removed by the way)

On the system recovery screen it says E:can't open /cache/recovery/command

I've tried using wipe cache partition then wipe and just wipe. It still goes back to my last settings. Even my wallpaper which is of a picture of my son is on there.

Ideas?

I tried both ways, I thought it may have been cacheing data.

I'd pull pull the battery, replace it in a minute or so, then hold down power and home for at least 5 seconds, tap the search key when the triangle appears, scroll to factory reset using the volume down key, confirm, then select ok.

Did that earlier, let it sit for about 20 minutes with no battery. Card in and then card out.

Took it to the vzw store, they did a reflash. No dice. New phone on the way, it kept reseting to last Tuesday. So odd, even the rep said so and he was in the know on droids.
