I got another Evo for someone else and it was already rooted. But on the downside it had Clockwork Recovery. So I downloaded the appropriate Amon Ra zip file and put it on the root of their SD card. I renamed it PC36IMG.zip and also put another copy on the root of the same file renamed PC36IMG (no .zip). Rebooted into bootloader and it says there's no file to update. Is this because of how the previous owner of the phone rooted it? Or is there maybe another way to install Amon Ra?

It needs to be named PC36IMG.zip
Do not remove the .zip extension just make sure it's not .zip.zip

what computer are you using? do you have it setup so that the files are showing the extensions? do you see something like XXXXXXX.zip? if so then you have the file named correctly. but if you see XXXXXX and no zip at the end then you have it setup so that the extensions are hidden. so by naming it PC36IMG.zip in reality it is PC36IMG.zip.zip and if that is the case then hboot will not see it. so check your settings on your computer and try again.

also it could also be a bad download as well.

I'm using a windows xp computer. I have windows explorer set up so i can see the file extensions and i think I've tried 5 different downloads. I've downloaded it directly on the phone and on the computer and neither worked. I can use clockwork recovery, but I've been using amon ra and I'm used to that. From what I've seen I think i like amon ra more.

You might be having sd card issues.
Tyr and save all the contents of your sd card to your pc, then format the card. Hen transfer al the info back and try the PC36IMG again. Worth a try. :)
