Cant install Google Maps

I have HTC desire Android 2.2. I unistalled google maps. But instead of being unistalled it just removed all the updates and now i have 4.4 version. When i go to market to update there is no update button. Only an "open" button which says "application could not be found" How can i get my google maps back? I dont want to foctory reset that would be an obvious solution. I dont want to root either.
