I just rooted my Ally phone a few days ago following the directions on this site. I did it pretty much so I could have the WiFi Tethering... I bought Easytether, but it kept dropping the internet connection and was so slow! Barnacle seems to be even slower, so right now I'm just connected to both. I also can't make calls and use the internet at the same time.

Help teach me how to make my phone into a Supahphone!!!

I don't really understand what a ROM is and why I would want one? I really like having LauncherPro because the home button takes me to my notifications. I wanna get rid of unused apps, but Titanuim seemed to almost brick my phone! Actually I don't even really know what bricking is (so please explain this to me too please!), but yeah... I just wanna know all the cool things I can do with the android and make it faster! The other issue I'm having is that I'm not getting a lot of bars and I have verizon. My old rumor phone through sprint got 5 bars...could this have anything to do with my slow connection?

Also weird is that my phone updated a few days ago and when it did that, it messed up my ability to open Easytether. It still works, if I don't use my app killer, but I can no longer open it. I'm not sure what update I got but it says the firmware is 2.1.... I thought 2.2 is the newest and I'd like to know how to get it! It seems I have the 50% bug too!! YIKES my phone thinks it's without service 98% of the time and my battery life is shot.

Right, well since not all of your questions are generic android ones, I've moved your post here to the Ally section. (I didn't go for the rooting section though - I don't know about the 50% bug so I don't know if it's root related). But I'll answer what I can.

Ok, so a ROM, in this case, is referring to firmware for your phone. So at the moment you, presumably, have stock firmware on your phone. But you can switch to a custom firmware (a.k.a. a custom ROM). These are usually improved versions of stock firmwares, or offer features not available to your phone through official channels (e.g. newer versions of android - so that's how you get your hands on 2.2).

I'm not sure what you mean by Titanium nearly bricking your phone. Bricking means to literally kill the handset, so it can't be booted or recovered at all (and so all you have is an expensive brick :p). Titanium should be able to remove any app in a few seconds without much hassle - what happens when you try it?

If you're having reception issues, you might want to flash a new radio. But, beware that flashing a radio can brick your phone (Firmwares can't, even if the flash goes wrong). The important thing to remember whilst doing this is: Never, no matter what happens, pull the battery. So make sure you have a full charge first. I'll have to let an Ally user point out the way to a new radio :)

Okay that's what I thought it meant to brick your phone :p

So when I was using titanium, it kept notifying me over and over that it was using SU privileges, and then my phone overheated without warning, died and I couldn't get it to come back on for the rest of the night. So I immediately uninstalled when I thankfully got it to turn back on.

So what do you mean by never pull the battery? Does it just increase the chance you could brick your phone? I wanna try to flash to a new radio.. would love to learn how! Also I think the 50% bug is an issue with the 2.1 update that the phone company did. It messed up a couple of apps I paid for too.... so annoying!

Anyone know of a ROM for Ally's that's got the 2.2 update?

No, if you lose power in the middle of a radio flash you're pretty much guaranteed to brick it. That said, people flash radios all the time without incident. It's just important you know before you flash one :) Firmware is much safer, as far as I know that can't brick your phone.

I'm sure there are guides on how to flash these things in the Ally's All Things Root section (It does differ with each phone).

And I have no idea why/how Titanium would do that =/ I haven't heard of it before.

Yeah so I ended up just getting a custom ROM, and I see there are commands for getting rid of unwanted apps are listed on the forum. BUT, the update didn't really do much to improve my signal... so I think I am going to try and flash it... I'll see what I can find :) I need faster internet sooo bad!
