I am having problems rooting my friend's Evo he bought 2 days ago! I've been trying to "downgrade" his phone to Froyo 2.2 so I can root it, but I can't even get the phone to enter recovery mode with the power+volume button press. I have searched on google and here but have not found anything that'll work. I was trying to root with unrEVOked3. Any help you can give me will be greatly apreciated! Thanks for taking a moment to read this and keep up the great work guys.

    First, welcome to the Forums:D

I will move this thread to the All things root section and you should get some of questions answered;)

BTW, has the phone been upgraded to the official GB/2.3.3? If so, unfortunately, root has not been found:(

I am assuming since you said you were trying to downgrade it to 2.2 that it is currently running 2.3. You will not be able to root it at this time. They are working to find the exploit that will give us root access to the hboot version that you likely have on your phone. To get to hboot you need to go to settings>applications and uncheck fastboot. That will allow you to get to the bootloader. Let us know what your hboot version is but if it is 2.16 you will have to wait.

Thanks for the welcome! Well I think my friend is out of luck, cuz he got desperate and instead of waiting 1 day for me to root his phone, he got another friend to root it, and the guy made the mistake of telling him to go ahead and do the OTA update (he hadn't made it clear that it had actually come with 2.2, today he admitted that he had updated to 2.3) and now they're both crying to me so I can fix they're phones! I was wondering if there was any way of flashing the stock 2.2 that it came with so that I can use unrEVOked and then I can flash the Custom rooted 2.3 rom? Thanks again.

That I have seen, it will come back with an error that it has a newer version already. I don't think it will be long before they get root access to the new hboot but unfortunately there really is no telling.

Yeap I tried it and came back with the error. And the hboot version is 2.16, so I will wait for the new exploit. Thanks so much for the help guys, I'll make sure to educate my friend in waiting to do things right instead of rushing into things!

Glad the issue was worked out, but I'm curious as to what excuse did he give to get a replacement EVO.
