Root [CDMA] Flashing any rom/Nand results in bootloop

3vodroid

Android Expert
Hey guys. I'm speaking for a friend with a 3vo so I'm going to do the best I can to describe the situation. He was on ICS rooted and s-off. With 4-ext recovery. Followed the instructions to a T from the guide.

Made a Nand and attempted to flash meanrom. It went all the way to sense and then bootlooped. White screen then off white screen.....

Tried to restore the Nand and it didn't even make it past the white htc screen without bootlooping.

I've looked all over and found that this is a common problem with the 3vo when s-on or when trying to flash a GB rom when on ICS or vice versa. Wierd thing is this phone is successfully rooted, Successfully s-off, and on ICS.

I have numerous roms and nothing. Every time it bootloops it won't restore the nands I make sonim forced to run an RUU and start from scratch. I'm on my third time re rooting and attempting a flash.

It DID WORK one time on cool ics. So that made me want to try meanrom because that's the rom I want to be on and it bootloops again. So i RUU, reroot and try and flash cool ics because I figured it worked last time it should this time right? Wrong. It bootlooped.

So here I am I'm out of ideas so I came to the pros :) any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

the ruu did not bootloop correct? it boots and runs fine?

make sure he is doing a full wipe(data, cache, dalvik cache) and since youre having prollems may want to format system and boot also. ext 4 has an option to format "all except sd card" to keep it simple.

im not familiar with cdma roms, but make sure the roms youre trying ARE scripted to install the kernel(they should be)

make sure he is flashing cdma roms on a cdma evo 3d ;)

if he used the jp bear tool,it wouldnt be a bad idea to run an ruu, then factory reset or clear storage from hboot if the prollem persists,or if he has flakey or unstable data

Yep I've ran the RUU a couple times and it goes right through no problem.. I just don't know why I can't get a rom to stick. I even tried flashing then kernels manually. Still loops.

When I ran the RUU it still kept s-off. Is this normal? That's the only thing I haven't had to do numerous times. I did the wire trick one time and that was it.

It is normal to keep s-off after the ruu. You shouldn't need to unlock your bootloader and all that since you are s-off. There are easier ways to flash recovery and then a rom without using fastboot!

Also from your first post, did you do a battery pull after the bootloop before trying to enter recovery? I've not ran into any bootlooping issues that I couldn't recover from :/

Yeah I use flash image gui for my ltevo. Unfortunately it's s-on.

Anyways yes in order to get out of bootloop I had to pull the battery. It was the only way out :(

If i am s-off and have unlocked is that a problem? Should I re lock since I'm already s-off?

So after a battery pull, you can't get to recovery with volume down and power?

It doesn't hurt anything to have it unlocked... Basically in simple terms the unlocked bootloader gives you some extra write permissions, s-off gives you full write permissions. Once s-off you don't need to unlock the bootloader.

Now if you want to use fastboot commands when s-off, I can't remember if you need the bootloader unlocked or if they will work with s-off. Scotty will have to clarify that for me.

As far as bootlooping I've had plenty of that but always been able to pull battery, boot into bootloader with volume down + power button and get into recovery to flash another rom or restore backup.

No I can get back into recovery. But after it bootloops with a rom it will bootloop with everything including nands. This I'm forced to run an RUU and start over.

I have heard other people having this problem. I'm not sure exactly what causes it. I have not personally ran into this issue. What rom did you start with and make a nandroid backup of and what rom did you try to flash first when I started bootlooping?

as brian said, it is normal for s-off to remain,as what revolutionary and jp bear give are radio s-off,meaning the radio is not telling the bootloader to do any security checks, regardless of what hboot version it is. the location of the radio secure flag is such that it is not affected by OTAs,rom or RUU flashes, and effectively remains until we change it :)

the status of the relocked watermark is only a concern if the phone has factory warranty, and you want to remove all visible traces of it for a warranty claim.

the watermark is eliminated, and the hboot will be locked again as a result of jp bears tool. unfortunately, unlocking it produces the same results it did when you were s-on- you cannot get back to locked unless you s-on,the s-off again

so,relocking at this point does not offer you much benefit. if you need to warranty the phone, you can s-on,then s-off again later,or if thats a high area of importance(to some folks it is) you can go ahead and do it now, while your phone is 100% working ;)

the advantages of unlocked are some extra fastboot commands, most notibly fastboot flash and fastboot boot. while these commands are nice, there are other ways to skin the cat. if you want to stay locked

an alternative if you like the extra fastboot commands is to run one of jpbears patched hboots, wich will allow full fastboot write commands, and keep your locked status.

on to your other issue... what ruu are you running each time?

Great news guys. I figured it out. Kinda. Lol. I ran an RUU and went with zedomax's writeup and rooted/got revolutionary recovery. Made a Nand and flashed away. ( achieved s-off also)

Also remember this is a freinds phone who doesn't understand what he is doing all that much. So our flashing problem could have stemmed from something he did wrong..

I wish I didn't sell my 3vo. Oh well:(
