They cdma hero just got rooted (http://theunlockr.com/2009/11/07/how-to-root-your-cdma-htc-hero-sprint-verizon/). At the bottom it says "ANYONE WANT TO TEST THIS METHOD ON THE DROID ERIS AND THE CLIQ? Don't see why it wouldn't work identically" I decided to give this a shot on the moment to no avail.

I get all the way to "/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh"

then I receive "[1] Killed /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh" not sure if I should get that or not.

But I tried to then remount /system as rw (mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system) and got "operation not permitted"

Anyone give this a shot and get different results?
Anyone got ideas to make this work on the moment?

I've been trying this and other methods of rooting all day. I get the exact same results as you describe. Apparently the hole that allowed asroot2 was plugged by Samsung in their version of the OS.

I'm still hopeful that we'll find a way sooner or later.

This is what we should get if the asroot2 script worked"

    $ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
    [+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
    Opening: /proc/857/fd/3
    SUCCESS: Enjoy the shell.

    Obviously its not working.

This is one of the reasons Im considering a Hero. Im definitely not smart enough to figure it out, but the lack of chatter in threads like this really concerns me. Then again, it took almost a month to get the Hero rooted. Another thing that worries me is not having support from XDA. This is the longest decision on a phone Ive ever had....... Hero or Moment???!? Got till this thursday to make a choice. Sorry didnt mean to turn this into another comparison thread.

We're pushing for Android 2.0, I think rooting 1.5 is not as much of a concern to us as it might be for Hero users.

But if the Moment was rooted now, wouldnt that be one step closer to getting a hacked ROM with 2.0? Instead of waiting for sprint/samsung to realease it?

I'm just saying, I think with the Hero, because HTC did a better job at integrating the OS, people moved on to other things (like rooting it.) With the Moment, we've got a host of issues that have been at the forefront over the last week, and for those of us who bought the phone on day 1, we're just now getting around to looking at other challenges now that we've nailed down the battery issue, connectivity issues, and some other release bugs/quirks.

Consider the length of time it took from Hero release date to being rooted; the Moment has only been out for a week.

What does 2.0 have to do with rooting??? Once we achieve root we have root forever.

What issues does the moment have over the hero?? I can easily last a day on my battery 2 if i conserve. Try power cycling your battery. As for connectivity problems I have none. I've used the hero many of times since my friend owns it and we both agree the moment runs much smoother than the hero.

Seems to have a popularity issue. No offense to Moment owners(I'd be on if I was sticking it out with Sprint most likely) but with the Hero being the first CDMA Android phone, and the Droid and Droid Eris coming out the same week as the Moment, it just didn't get the publicity to get it out there, and looks like to me it got almost completely overshadowed. Although when you think about it, it's hard for the press to get excited about another stock 1.5 phone when the jazzed up ui of the Hero/Eris and Android 2.0 Droid hogging a lot of the attention :(.

The beholdII rooting method is using the same kernel exploit that was used for the cdma hero. When the hero was rooted i did some research and our moments do not have the same kernel. It seems that samsung or who ever modified the kernel patched that exploit already. Most likely a new method of rooting will need to be found for the moment.

I sent Maxisma (rooted behold2) over on xda a PM to see if he could help us out. If he is willing but needs a phone to root it would you guys be willing to donate to the cause?? I'm assuming he doesn't need a clean esn inorder to root it so I'm thinking I might "lose" my phone. I haven't heard back from him yet so I will let you guys know what he says.

Alright guys I never received a PM back from Maxisma. I did found out the Maxisma had nothing to do with rooting the behold2. All he did was use the same file from the cdma hero root which obviously doesn't work on the moment.

UPDATE: I just sent Zinx Verituse (creator of asroot2) over on xda a PM to pick at his brain a little on rooting the moment. I'll keep you guys updated.

sooo anyone with a Hero post 2.1 = No Root For You?
    is this the consensus? =(

can't wait for Sprint's iPhone... although Sprint sucks swampass here on the west coast so maybe I'm waiting for nothing. *sigh*

maybe i should just say "fun' it" and get a rotary telefony. >=|

(and yes i am always late to the party ... it is what it is)
