I'm helping Mom navigate her new Note II, and big surprise, she hates the emoticons. Is there any way to import emoticons like...those to the left, say??

I don't know about changing these in the Note II's native app. Possibly someone in the Note II forum here will be able to help with that.
The other option would be to download an alternative messaging app from the Play Store (Go SMS, Handcent, Chomp, Pansi,...), since these often include more options.
