Because an external LED is not a "charging indicator" - it happens to be used as one, but it's typically used for a lot more than that... and they were hitting a $200 price point, so as much had to be eliminated a possible.
You probably already know this, but for those unaware, you can quickly tap the power button and it will turn the screen on to let you know how charged it is without actually booting.
