So I am wondering--if I buy a cheap Android phone and root it, but don't have a cell plan attached, isn't it basically an iPod touch? I have wireless at work. I've seen LG Optimus "S" phones going for nothing on Ebay, like <$25.

I'm wondering what cheap Android phone would work for the following:

    1. Basic calendar
    2. email
    3. bike gps unit
    4. listen to music

Or do I need to have a cell plan to use the GPS?

    Thanks.

    welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
i have an og evo that is not in activated any more and i can use it as a mp3 player. i can connect to the internet via wifi. you can't use it with 3g or 4g as you do not have a data plan for it. but yes gps will work as well as the calender.

so i can't see why a cheap android device can't do the same thing as my inactive evo.

While you can use the gps, what app is it being used for? Alot of gps apps such as google apps require data connection and will prob be difficult to stay on a wifi while on the move

this is true about gps forgot about that. you are right, you will need a data plan for it to work away from a wifi signal. i never use my og evo as a gps unit.

Been using a kyocera rise that way for the past few weeks that way. Gps works but not sure if the app youusing needs data. I won this phone and it plays musiic relly well and typing. This with the slide out qwerty keyboard. Seen it on sale over the holidays as low as.$29..99. Great deal from Virgin Mobile.

You can cache maps or use downloaded maps.

Planned out, a data connection is not required for navigation.
