I am trying to find a way to hook my galaxy up to my Chevrolet cruise dashboard using the usb slot. It says format not supported on my car dash.

    Welcome xtravagent666!!

Funny running across your thread as I also have a Chevy Cruze and a Samsung Galaxy S3!!
What stereo do you have in your vehicle? Is your USB slot in the center console? (armrest).
Are you trying to listen to music?
    What year is your car?

ok...looks like you have the same radio I do too:)

Now, I would assume you are trying to listen to music?
Sorry for all the questions, but there is a reason, because I remember having the same issue as you are having.

    o.k...now I remember the issue I had.
I couldn't play music at all via the USB port, I could only play it if I had the headphone jack on the S3 and used the corresponding plug next to the usb port. I didn't even get any message on my stereo like you did.
Drove me nuts that I couldn't play music via USB.
My Ipod would connect, but my S3 would not.

After alot of searching, the only thing I came up with is to do music to stereo via bluetooth using A2DP by replacing the PDIM in the car.
Found one cheap on Amazon and it took me about 30 minutes to replace the O.E. PDIM in the car.
Now, I don't know if it will work in a 2011, but I don't see why not. You'll have to check your car radio firmware. (link below tells how to do that)
Here is the link I found on how to do it.:
DIY Bluetooth A2DP (Bluetooth Audio Streaming)

Here is the link for the PDIM on Amazon:
ACDelco 22797218 Multi Media Player Interface Module Assembly : Amazon.com : Automotive

Hope that helps a little, as I didn't any other way to connect music via USB
