BBC News - China: Teenager 'sells kidney for iPad'

    Here's the part I find interesting/disturbing...

Parents: Make sure you know what your children are up to.... please!

Got me thinking of a recent thread in AF called 'What would you do for an HTC EVO 3D?' or something similar.

I know, there isn't even a decent kidney app out for the iPad yet.

Although I did read they are a lot comfier and a much better fit because they're 4.6mm thinner than the original.

There's not even a liver app. Steve Jobs had to get a real one.

Plenty of gun simulator apps, but iPad and iPhone are rather poor for human organ simulator apps.

The only person I'll give a kidney to is Oprah. She is like a God to so many of us. Or perhaps my favorite rock star, Justin Beiber. I loved Enter Sandman before he left Metallica.

Seriously, it is illegal to sell a kidney here, thank Golly, as it should be.

well, when you consider all the rural migrants driving down the wages (this seems to be a middle class kid)..
Of course I wouldn't expect him to work full time :D

Just saying, to a 17 year old in China, $3k is probably worth a lot more than it is to you or me. That said, he blew a ton of it on an iPad. Forget the money. Selling a kidney to fund an electronic device for pleasure is ridiculous enough!

Yeah, for your average Chinese urbanite $3K is AT LEAST 5 times harder to come buy for anyone in the EU15 or US

I think the fact he spent it on an iPad (not dissing it) as well as a laptop shows he clearly is awful with his finances

Still, at least he got paid for his kidney, many just get a knock to the head and wake up with a scar on by their stomach in the morning...

.. and you would also need to sell your liver to pay the gas bills :D
[see, I CAN use the "correct" terminology :p]

Petrol is a better term for it. Gas is just dumb ;)

Petrol was once a trade name for refined petroleum spirits; I looked it up.

So you are correct, gas might not be the most accurate word and petrol is perhaps better. At least in GB. Petrol is a generic term for gasoline across the pond and I am American, Dag Nabbit. Real men call gas, gas.

Unfortunately, there is no more real Petrol/Gas; it went the way of the dinosaurs, which is quite ironic, I suppose. I miss high octane gas/Petrol because my 1960 Olds Super 88 has trouble drinking the Petrol/gas that passes for gas/Petrol. All we have is gas/Petrol flavored Petrol/Gas; both are unworthy of the name, er, names. Yes, I know, I said gas passing, so the gas passing or Fart jokes will likely follow.

But do not use the word Fart, I smell gas related troubles:

"In February 2009, Air-O-Matic, makers of Pull My Finger, an iPhone app that also makes flatulent sounds, threatened legal action against Infomedia claiming trademark infringement. The company claimed, had used the phrase "pull my finger" in its marketing material and demanded $50,000 in compensation. Infomedia responded by filing a complaint for declaratory judgement in Colorado District Court. The case between the two fart-producing companies became a caused calamity and was even featured on The Daily Show. In September 2009, the two companies went public with their settlement, a jointly produced iPhone application called 'Clear the Air.'

I just want to know if the kid will be okay. It's hard having one kidney, especially for a kid and since I doubt it is a highly paid doctor to do the operation. The kid might have side effects.

Why can't he just do what other Chinese people do and buy a rip-off instead. You can't use the full capabilities of the iPad in that country anyways.
