I use chompSMS, and I personally think it is better than handcent (I have tried both).

I haven't had this issue, so I would say it was a setting problem.

I would first make sure all of your alert options are turned on, there is an option to make the screen wake up briefly when you receive a text.

As for the green light, I have just tested it and it flashes green whatever I pick, so I assume that feature isn't supported on the Hero.

I was having a problem with missing texts, so I installed Missed Reminder it's a great app.

chomp tends to lose some messages, where as handcent doesnt. Its a neater application.

But many report that is has significant lag compared to chomp.

I tried Handcent and Chomp but I've gone back to the default. I value reliable performance much more than eye candy presentation. Performance / lag seems better than Handcent or Chomp and I actually like its plain but usable interface.

I say this to everyone on reply, if the majority of feedback Is good, with a few reporting problems then just download and try It yourself. Worst case scenario is you don't like it and have to uninstall!

Try chomp, handcent and if you like neither go back to the default

Agreed - that's why I'd never recommend one over the other as has been done in earlier posts.
