Custom Roms are variations of the stock rom. They are usually different in many ways. Sounds like you just want root. The stock rom has 2.1 and the 2.2 you are asking are different as well. There is a 2.2 that does not sound finish (from reading the thread).
Not sure if you know what you are asking. What do you want to do with root?
Well basically I noticed that with custom ROM's they modify Android a lot and add in and take out some of the apps. I was just looking for a rooted ROM that was as close to a stock ROM as possible.. without extras.
If there was a rooted 2.2 custom ROM for the Sprint HTC Hero that would be awesome but 2.1 would be fine too.
What I would do is go to geekfor.me and install fresh kitchen. You can root and remove apps that you do not want. Then you will have a Stock, rooted rom without whatever you removed.
Yes, you can go back. But why would you. The first thing after you get root is do a backup. Then you can remove what you want, just in case you delete the wrong thing.
Look over the roms at xda, there is a fully stock rom that is deodexed and zipaligned for max speed and ability to customize and still comes with everything the stock sprint rom does.
