Clear all notification icons?

Is there a way to clear all notification icons in the top bar?
Sometimes I get the ATT Hotspot icon and now an errant Gmail warning. I have Android 2.3.5. If you have to root, I can't do it now.

Pull the bar down and press clear all doesn't work for you?
