Help Clicking Email Notifications Opens Gmail, Not the Email

Unless I'm losing it, whenever I had a new email notification, pulled down the notification bar, and clicked the email, Gmail app opened up the email itself. All of a sudden, when I do the same thing, it opens up the Gmail Inbox and I have to click the email itself to open it.

Any idea what happened?

Am I delusional and this is how it's always been?

Funny - I thought I was crazy (probably still am), but for a different reason. Yesterday, my status bar notification started showing the actual subject of the new email. I don't think I've seen that happen before.

I call shenanigans!

haha, anytime it's just one email, you see the subject.

Oddly enough, mine went back to opening the email instantly. Android keeps you on your toes sometimes.
