What is the difference. I know CM9 is an AOSP ROM with some tweaks, but are those tweaks the only difference?

I have been thinking about trying out AOKP but I just don't really know what the difference is??

I believe AOKP has a lot more customisation options. I use AOKP now and had a go at CM9 a couple of months back, but I came back due to lack of features.

    More features, like what?

It was my understanding AOKP was stock android (like a Nexus) but for non Nexus phones. And CM ROMs were based on that with added options. Is that not correct?

Cm9 and AOKP are both custom roms based on AOSP. AOKP is more like Miui in a sense. You can custimize pretty much everything from font colors to notification bar, etc. I've never used it personally, but people like it. I can get some links explaining more on differences if you want. :)

AOSP (android open source project) when it starts out in raw form is stock android, what used to be more often referred to as "vanilla". Not to be confused with AOKP (android open kang project) which is a very intentional play on words. They took the original source and modded it greatly to add all sorts of feature. If you want something closer to stock, you can go with an AOSP rom that has very little additional coding done to it. Not sure what roms those would be since I like bells and whistles. :D

Have a look at this video for a quick intro to AOKP: AOKP Highlights.

The rate of change for AOKP is quite high. As you can see from the changelogs here: AOKP.co. So that video is possible a little out of date.
