since I last did a factory reset I've found that my internal compass has been inverted! all the apps that use it are now pointing in the opposite direction.
Is there a quick fix for this or do I need another factory reset?

Almost the same problem here. After I upgraded to the official Froyo update I did a full factory reset (as is advised) and I now find that the compass is 90 degrees rotated clockwise in some apps, and 180 degrees out of kilter in other apps.

I was hoping there was a special code we can dial to access the compass settings to remedy it, as there is for the GPS system.

It is a heavily discussed issue, intruduced by FroYo. More info on tweaking the compass you will surely find here [Coding]Compass tweaking Looks like the only one who does not know/care about it is Samsung itself, as this issue appears to NOT be fixed even in I5500LUYJPE firmware which is 2.2.1, so the only way is to force Samsung to fix it and write loads of angry feedback to them here: Contact Samsung Online Form
