I have a Samsung I415 Android phone from Verizon. When I plug it into my desktop, it charges the unit but otherwise does not recognize it as a device. Therefore I cannot sync calendar or contacts, or load music. Verizon's "software repair assistant" does not see the device either so it can't fix it. Kies software says a firmware update is needed.
 
In Kies, go to Tools/Reinstall device driver.

If that doesn't fix it, are you using the original USB cable that came with the phone? Some cables (like the ones that come with wireless headsets) have only 2 wires (for charging) because they don't have to transfer data to the computer, so you can't use them on a phone, except for charging it.
