I have the Samsung Note and a HP Laptop running Windows7. I have set up an ad-hoc wifi hotspot on my laptop for when I am offshore on a boat and can connect my laptop to the internet via the ethernet cable. I should be able to find my pc hotspot and connect my phone to it but it is not seen. I did have an app (wifi buddy) that could see the laptops hotspot but it would not let me connect to it on the phone. I know the hotsopt is there because other laptops can see my laptops hotspot. I have tried setting the hotspot on 2x HP Laptops and 1x Dell but the Note still can't find them. I even has a mate search for my hotspot on his HTC Android phone but he could not find it either.

The objective is to be able to connect to my laptops hotspot and use VoIP apps like Vibre.

Can anyone advise if they have managed this?

Android cannot connect to ad-hoc hotspots due to a software limitation.

Maybe that will get their act in gear and sort it out egh? I should have gone for that iPhone after all.

Get this though... when I called Samsung support, the tech helper said to turn it off and back on again... must have been a rocket scientist or read that as option 1 on her sheet. I told her that was silly and I have turned it off and on every day. The specialist support then said it was a problem with my laptop as her Android phone connects to her laptop fine. Come on Samsung..... get your act in gear.

Its not Samsung only. I don't know what that technician is talking about or maybe the person misunderstood you (normally its phone to laptop wifi share, yours seem to be an unusual setup), but the limitation is in Android itself, not on Samsung's end. Other Android devices may be able to connect because of certain apps which fix this software limitation, however often these apps are device specific and needs root access since it adds and edits system files.

If your device is rooted, you need something like this:
