Help Contacts gone after update

Just updated the OS on my droid 2 today and only 11 contacts were carried over out of about 180 or maybe more. I did a lot of searching and none of the fixes others recommended remedied the problem. I checked my contacts from my gmail account on my pc and only the same 11 were there. This also happened once before, I broke my phone, replaced it with another droid 2 and when they transferred over the data these same 11 contacts were the only ones that made it over. The guy at the verizon store did something where he said all of my contacts were hidden and he individually selected each of them and this brought them back. Does anyone have any ideas on how to restore my contacts, possibly getting to the screen I mentioned.

This doesn't fit with a couple of things that you're saying, but in Contacts try hitting the menu button (four squares)/Display Group/All Contacts.

You got to make sure when you add contacts to sync those to your GMAIL account and not just on your phone.
