Contacts sync is broken for some people on Android Oreo

The contacts sync feature of Android seems to be broken for some people who are using Android Oreo. A new thread on the Google Product Forums has cropped up with over 110 reports in a very short time. Most people affected seem to be using Pixel 2 devices.
