Here's some background information to get things started:
    - my cell provider is Alltel
    - I have an HTC Hero; I'm using Android 2.1

OK, I have a really, really strange and frustrating problem. Somehow, someway, my phone will stop receiving text messages. It seems strongly, strongly correlated to downloading new apps via the Market.

When I first got my phone last June, I downloaded some of those Task Manager apps. Around this time, I found that I stopped receiving text messages. I once with like four days without receiving a text, which is odd, because I text fairly regularly. It finally dawned on me that my phone wasn't retrieving messages properly. I restarted my phone, sent a message to my bank to get my balance, and instantly received a text from them. I DID NOT, however, ever receive the messages I had missed over the previous four days (and I'm positive people had sent me some, because they mentioned it in person). I concluded that the Task Manager had probably killed one of the processes that fetches text messages, so I decided to just factory reset my phone on the safe side.

I've went MONTHS without having any problems, and I've been very, very conservative about installing apps on my phone. I use only a select few at this point. I have not had any problems whatsoever. A few days ago at work, a couple of coworkers of mine told me to check out some games -- I think it was like "Mighty Miners" and then some construction, bridge-building game "X-Construct." Within hours of installing these games, the same old problem reared it's ugly head -- I stopped receiving texts. I'd restart, I'd get texts again, but they would eventually stopped being retrieved again. (Again, I always test this by sending a message to my bank, which will give me an instant reply) I factory reset my phone, and have not had any problems again.

I'm getting really frustrated, because it seems like downloading apps off of the marketplace is a complete crap shoot for me. I sincerely doubt that some of these apps -- ESPECIALLY games -- would have any affect on something like that. Something like a task manager? Sure, I can see that. But this problem has happened probably 6-7 times. I have literally factory reset my phone that many times because I just outright lose the ability to receive texts with any reliability. I don't think this is a problem with my provider, because it seems strongly correlated to installing new apps. I also fail to see how this could be an issue with my phone, as opposed to just a generic Android issue...

Has anyone heard of something like this? Any clue what could cause this? I'm basically at a loss, and feel like I almost have to give up my ability to download apps of the marketplace because of how much of a crap shoot this has turned out to be. It's like playing Russian Roulette, with a really good chance of my phone being rendered useless until I factory reset again.

Also, there are a few select apps I download every time I get my phone; I will sometimes have these installed for months without any problems at all. I've problem had the "no text" problem instigated by at LEAST 5-6 different apps.

It might just be a coincidence that you happened to install a game and then your text messages stopped coming in. I do not see any reason why a game being installed would interrupt your ability to receive text messages.

I am, however, glad that you got rid of the task managers because they definitely COULD cause issues with your ability to receive text messages in a timely manner. To be honest, it could just be an issue with your service in that area. My friend had issues with receiving text messages for several hours one day. He was able to send them out and receive them from other Sprint users, but not from any other carrier. If this happens again, give Sprint a call and ask if a cell tower is out or under going maintenance near by. Good luck.

I just have a really hard time accepting that this is a coincidence, because I literally went months without having this issue, but within hours of installing those two games it was messed up again... it's especially hard for me to believe since this isn't the first time that this has happened a handful of times. Also, if it were a maintenance issue, why would factory rebooting solve the problem completely 100% of the time? Wouldn't the problem still persist?

I appreciate the possibilities, it just really does not mesh with what's happening. Also, note that I am on Alltel's network and not Sprint's. The only reason I want to reiterate that is because maybe someone with Alltel has also experienced the same issues.

Again, thank you for the suggestion.

Alright, that is no problem. I have just never run into an issue where an app affected my ability to send or receive text messages.

It is certainly probable that in your situation this is the case. I hope you can get it worked out.

I had the same problem. Went away for months after I reset my phone, and now it's doing it again! However, if I'm making a call, my texts come through, but when I call my phone, it takes 3 or more rings for my phone to actually ring... Also, "Sprint Zone" tells me it's unable to update network. I really think it's Sprint and I think it frickn sucks! So tired of this crap!
