Simple. Not all people can write new prl's off their device (like me) and sometimes ppl don't wanna spend a lot of time on their computer (like me) im very in to tweaking my phone with codes not much in to roms and kernels.

The idea is for an experienced dev to create an app that'll auto flash a prl through recovery without the need of going through hundreds of steps or tons of forums to learn how its done. Wouldn't that be a great app to have in the android community.
Now I know it can be done. Never say never

I don't think that this is possible because the phone isn't allowed to write to that part of nvram unless it's in diagnostic mode. There's no way to run commands from the phone while in this mode, hence the requirement for a pc and standalone software to be able to send the commands.

Actually I should refine my original post by saying that what I stated refers to Qualcomm devices, I don't have much knowledge with other chip sets.

So then what phones can write their prl on the handset?

None that I'm aware of, but definitely not any based on Qualcomm. What you're asking for is different from an ota prl update because those files are crypto signed and without that they wouldn't be allowed to alter the nv.

I've read forums where the author instructs to go through these steps

    Settings/about phone/ prl version(touch)/select new prl/ write prl
Phone reboots and after the prl is now flashed.
Idk if their doing it off a stock Rom but gosh wouldn't that be a nice feature to have on all phones.

Definitely! CDMA Workshop and QPST can be a gigantic pain to use sometimes. But in my having been changing prl's for over a decade it requires the most amount of time and effort for the least amount of beneficial difference. Actually in my experience there's usually no discernable difference at all between most prl's.

Overbyte you've been flashing prl's for ten years. What would you recommend a good prl to use? I think those who read the forums that are about prls try finding the best one out their. I'm running 56009. On that though... is their a way to create our own custom prl?

To be honest in the last 2 years I think that I've only tried 4-5 different prl's, I'm currently on Virgin who uses Sprints towers exclusively, people have said that using the Sprint file is preferred because they update more quickly than Virgin does. Honestly the only speed differences were minor and probably more likely a result of differing tower congestion than any true improvement. I currently just check once a month for an update and use the stock vendors tower list. If you have a really difficult time and coverage maps show that you should be able to receive good coverage I would give it a try but as I mentioned I have never seen any significant real world improvements to justify the time expenditure. If you've never done it then do it a couple of times just for the learning process but don't expect anything significant to come out of it. A few years ago corporate prl's did make a bit of a difference because of greater travel in that population but with so much of society being mobile nowadays the difference just doesn't exist any longer. So bottom line is I now stick with the latest carrier supplied file unless I'm having extremely slow data or numerous dropped calls. Also it's certainly possible to edit existing files but it's certainly not worth the effort.

So long story short new releases phone pretty much have a good enough prl to say they get good service (depending on provider) but it doesn't hurt to check for an update every now n then. :) thanks for the info. Very useful in my journey

You're welcome, sorry about being a bit long winded but there seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject. :p
