D3 custom contact notifications

Hey guys, so I read up online how to set a custom notification for texting. It works well, and didn't need any third party apps. But, I cannot seem to set a custom notification sound per contact. I am running off of the stock OS, and don't want to risk turning my phone into a paperweight.
The files I downloaded onto my cell work just fine, they're the correct MP3 format and show up just fine.
When I go into Options inside of a contact, I'm presented with two options: Ringtone and Incoming calls. The first only changes the sound while receiving a call, while the second sends the call straight to voicemail.
I want to change the text notification sounds for my friends, but can't seem to find the option. Am I looking in the wrong spot, or do I need to download a third party app. If the app, I want to continue using the vanilla messaging app and only change the sounds made when receiving a text notification.

Thanks!
Nathan

The stock messaging app does not support per-recipient custom text notification sounds. I am almost 100% sure that the (free) messaging app Handcent allows you to customize notifications per contact (I don't use the app myself.) After you install it and get it set up, you'll want to go into the stock messaging app and turn off notifications in that app so that you don't get double notifications.
