My desire is running 2.2 and I am trying to turn on auto data back up.The manual tells me:home page> menu>settings>privacy>automatically back up data to sd card.
I don't have privacy in my settings menu- any ideas?

It's been hidden for some unkown reason.
Make sure settings is searchable (Menu > Settings > Search), then enter 'Privacy' in the google search widget, after first tapping on the icon to the left and selecting Settings, you should get a hit for Backup & Restore there.
Note, it doesn't seem to work if you press the search hardware button, and if you're using Swype, you'll have to tap out the word letter by letter.

Sorry about my ineptitude, but I'm confused- I have done menu>settings, then hit the (physical) search button.I then get a Google search widget, which prompts me to speak into it.Saying 'privacy' then takes me to the google homepage, with every search result for the word privacy :thinking:

HTC just told me this: Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Desire. The option Privacy was removed in Android 2.2 as it has caused problems previously and will be back again in Android 2.3 which is beeing sent out at the moment. You can backup your data with 3rd party applications out of the Marketplace.
Thanks for your help and suggestions , I've learnt where the search button is anyway! This is my first smart phone, which you probably guessed, and up to now it has been plain sailing.I have it all synced up and working for me fine, but there is lots to learn:)

Funny, but if I use the search key this doesn't work. If I use the search widget however, it does. Odd.
