Dec. 11th Droid Update

On December 11th there is supposed to be an OTA software update for the Motorola Droid. And in one of the things it's supposed to fix is the Auto-Focus for the camera. Now my question is, Will this help at all with the graininess in lower light pictures? Or is there a camera app taht could help it take better pictures after the auto focus is fixed?

It's unlikely that software will be able to fix a grainy low light picture. The lens isn't very big and doesn't let in much light. That' more of a hardware issue.

Granted, my Droid hasn't come in yet. So, I'm only speculating.

It's on the main page of Phandroid. They posted the internal documents mentioning the "known issues" and expected fix dates.

That should help the Barcode apps quite a bit.

The reason I am hoping that the Update will dramatically increase the Photo camera usability/picture quality is that the Video camera on the Droid takes GREAT videos. So to me that leads to an all software problem.

It's disappointing that there is nothing in the notes about Exchange security policy or support for IPSec group name / password in the native VPN client. I couldn't care less about the camera.

That said, I am still very happy with Droid so far and I'm pretty impressed at the fact that they are already releasing an update. Here's hoping that the updates keep on rolling out!

It also looks like most of the Exchange fixes listed in that doc aren't due for release until 1/22/10.

Will the update automatically go to the people who already own a Droid? Or do they have to take them to Verizon stores after Dec 11 in order to get these updates? Sorry if my questions is dumb but I suck with tech stuff

The update is "OTA" which means "Over The Air". So you can just download the update straight to your phone without going to Verizon, i believe.

From what I've read so far, it looks like it will be OTA (Over the air), and will likely be "pushed" out to all Droid devices.

BTW, I have Android firmware 2.1 in my DROID. The update should include that. So far from what I can tell, it very stable.

I'm thrilled they are updating it so fast, at least they are acknowledging the problems.

Grain in photos is almost certainly due to a hardware issue from a poor quality sensor. Nothing will fix that

Bad saturation can be tweaked in software, BUT the washed out look from the LED flash can't be fixed, that is due to the color temperature of the LEDs.

Just my opinions on it as a former professional photog.

From what I have read the clicking noise is normal as the camera in the Droid is a mechanical focusing camera versus an electronic focusing camera like in the HTC Droid Eris.
