I've always had a nokia. The range of 3rd party support for symbian has always been huge, and meant that i have always been able to update the phone & keep ahead of the curve. Unfortunately the n97 seems to have destroyed all the momentum nokia had built up, and i'm just not interested in it.
Having searched and searched i finally found a touchscreen phone that can at least match the hardware specs of my n95, as well as offer a platform to add lots and lots of stuff - the omnia galaxy.
However to be perfectly honest, i just dont know enough about android to make the final decision as to whether i order the galaxy. So if you could help, that would be great!
- Android is meant to be common no matter what it runs on, so if i find an android app / software on the web, will it work on the samsung?
- I think the android market place is brilliant. Concentrating software efforts like the iphone is a recipe for success. That's the main problem with Nokia's Ovi store, it's catering for too many versions of the symbian platform, and too many different device requirements. However the beauty about symbian is that you dont have to get / download software from Ovi if you dont want to.
So my question is; can you download android apps to your computer, and load them yourself, without having to get "Google approved" apps from the android market place?
- As android releases come out, will you always be able to update the phone with them? The galaxy has cupcake 1.5. Can i load 2.0, 3.0 etc onto it? Also on loading, i assume that's the same as a firmware upgrade and it will wipe the phone. What happens if you've bought apps from the market place? Will they be wiped, or can you transfer them onto your computer, and put them back on the phone after the update?
- Lastly, I thought android was meant to be common across every and all devices. However engadget seem to think there's some differentiation already beginning...will manufacturers start accidentally splitting up the platform and having different "flavours" ala linux? Cuz that would be crap!
It's a long post i know, but hopefully someone will be able to answer these for me!
Thanks
