Default application in android

hello all,
I have been using android 2.2froyo from last few days. i want to watch some flv video files on my phone. for that i have been using moboplayer. i was wondering if there is any option to play .flv video files by default. I mean is there any settings where i can assign moboplayer as a default application so it can play all supported formats, just by double-clicking the video file ? so that I do not have to open the application and browse for the file everytime I want to watch a video?
I know I can change this setting for few formats used by default video player.
but I would like to know if there is a way to assign some applications to play unknown formats(e.g. flv, rtf etc)..

Any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance !

Out of curiousity why would you want to assign an app to play a format that's unknown to it? Usually when apps get installed they tell the OS what formats they are able to play...

Android's default video player can't play all formats like .flv and .rm etc..
After installing a third party software (for example, moboplayer in my case)-
if I have two video files, one in .flv format and another in .mp4 format; I could just double-click the .mp4 file to get pop-up box asking me to choose the default application to use to open similar(.mp4) files. However it is not the case with .flv files(or any other files not supported by default android apps). Adroid will treat them as an unknown file format forever.

Therefore, I have to open moboplayer and browse to that .flv file in order to open it everytime i want to watch it. If there was a way I could set open these 'unkown' (e.g. .flv) files using particular applications(eg moboplayer), it would be a lot easier and user-friendly.
I hope that is explanatory.

EDIT: I have just found out that I can use some file manager(s) to accomplish this. But it would still be a lot helpful if Android had settings for such stuff.

I believe it's a setting in the file manager. Android doesn't have a file manager built in, so your file manager app needs to call the correct program when you click on the file.

I know Astro has settings for file types where you can change things like this.

well, as long as if a tool allows you manage (view, open, delete, copy etc.) files and folders, you can call it a file-manager. So, I'm pretty sure, 'files' to the android is a file-manager. just tap on 'files' icon, the title line calls itself 'File manager'.

Indeed, Astro is a very nice tool, gave it a try and works just perfect. It has got some other features which are helpful as well. for instance, you can use multiple selection for music files and make playlists very fast and effectively.
p.s. Android by default doesn't seem to have any option for making custom (multilple files/folder based) playlists either.

I don't know what this "Files" thing is you speak of.

I don't have it on my phone. I didn't have it running HTC Sense ROM, and I don't have it now running a more vanilla Android ROM.

If you have that, it was either installed by you or by the phone manufacturer.

Android, by itself, does not have a file manager built in.
