I have tried several browsers for my hero and so far the best by a mile is the default.

Opera - don't bother. Delete from the market.

Steel and dolphin - cannot open links in new tab.

Default browser - can open links in a new window, supports more of the sites I visit. Supports embedded media. But, am i missing somerhing? Does it have an easy exit?

My hero runs standard orange Rom 1.5

Long press on a link, it will then open in a new tab.

Long press, and select link from the radial menu, this will open in a new tab

Those 2 are far far better than the default.

Infinity also supports frames and has a better UI. (A bit cluttered, but you can move it all out of the way for full screen browsing.)

The only drawbacks to the other 3rd party browsers is the lack of Flash support.

I have one of the same questions as the OP -- how do you fully "exit" the default browser, such that the next time you go to it you get your home page, with "back/forward" greyed out, browser not running in the background, etc? Whether it's banking, a random slow site, etc, I'd like to know that I've closed the session and not get back to it next time I browse.

The only way I've found is to go to "Menu", "Windows", "+" to get a new window, then "Menu", "Windows" again, slide to the old window and hit "X" to close it. Am I missing something? There has to be a better way.

I was trying 3rd party browsers, too. Except for Steel, going to a home page was not easy. And Steel keeps crashing.

I called tech support regarding default browser home page access. Technician got a Droid and found what i'd found: No way to command "go home" though it is easy to choose the home page in "settings". He had to find a supervisor to get the "solution":

Choose file:windows, then on the list press the x next to any of the page URL's. That will load the "home" page, which should therefore be called the "press the windows button under the file, and push the X button to cancel the current URL on a given page, and you'll find the page you've put into settings" page....
