deleting 100s photos. have lost delete icon

Samsung tablet galaxy 3. By mistake downloaded 1000s of photos which I dont want on my tablet. Have deleted quite a few, but now seem to have lost the ability to delete anything. The icon has gone. Also can select 'all' but cannotnow remove the little white squares from the photos. Anyone able to help me? Thanks
