Go to Settings > Accounts and uncheck "Sync Contacts" from each account where such a setting exists (e.g., press "Google" and then your gmail account(s)).
Go to Settings > Manage apps, scroll down to Contacts, tap it and then "Clear cache" and "Clear data"
