I'm a T-Mobile customer, but have only just realised I can delete the official Twitter app from my HTC Desire. Has this always been the case? Or have I only just noticed this to be the case?

I noticed as I am in the market for a new Twitter app, as the official one lacks options and also never refreshes when I am connected via mobile data.

I believe the official Twitter app was included in Froyo, and can't be deleted without root access

Yes, you must be rooted (no big deal) and use something like Root Explorer (easy way) or a Terminal Emulator (the hard way).

Anyway be aware that some apps start Services that are needed by the System and if you remove them you may have to reflash the whole ROM.

    Good luck,
    :)
