Certainly disable data roaming. In addition I generally turn off mobile data completely when I'm out of the country.

3G? In principle you might find somewhere were there is 3G coverage but no 2G, but in general 2G signals are stronger so if you aren't using mobile data your battery will probably last better with this off as well. It also depends where you are going: a UK handset won't be able to use North American 3G frequencies anyway (2G will work), so there it won't make any difference.

If you aren't going to be using it as a phone or on 3G, but only Wifi, you would save a lot of battery by turning off the cell radio completely. You could do this by going into airplane mode and then turning Wifi back on. Also, there are some widgets (I use Dazzle) that can toggle the cell radio specifically.
