Help Desire being exchanged how to back up?

ive been advised to return my Desire due it not recognising its on charge sometimes (mentioned in a previous post). What is the best way i can back up my settings, apps etc?

ive browsed a few posts and the best i can come up with is this one reply #5. however this is more from back up not full replace of the phone?
does it not matter? has anyone got any suggestions, comments or thoughts to that reply or the best methods to use?

My phone isnt rooted so i dont think i can use 2 and 3?

there are apps like mybackup, but titanium is really the best way to back up (rooted)
