Desire Firmware OTA Update

Discussion in 'Android Devices' started by rigsby, May 26, 2010.

  1. I am on Orange as well, but the phone is from CPW so, unlocked/unbranded to begin with. I checked manually for the update, after reading the thread here. Updated it yesterday, took about 5/10 minutes all in all included. Seems to be working just fine.

Anyone got any word on how this affects root with Apps2SD?

The update is available via manual update (unbranded Desire from Handtec) but I don't want to update and then my phone can't access my apps partition!

try one time factory reset, hope your problem will be solved. whenever we update phone with new rom, we should hard reset for its better result.

nope orange haven't brought any updates out am still on :( i seen people saying that it could be to do with oranges software that comes with the phone such as homescreen selector/maps/photo/ringtones etc

To those who haven't had it yet, I'd say don't be too concerned. I always think that updates are like an itch you feel compelled to scratch. But sometimes it doesn't achieve much. I can't say my life is significantly better or richer for this update; in fact, I haven't noticed any difference. Life goes on...

    (Or course, sometimes, they're crucial.)

I attempted the OTA update on my debranded Orange Desire yesterday and got the disabled Wi-Fi problem that lots of other people have had - I rolled back to the previous firmware I was using (1.15) but lost all my apps, app settings, home screens and some of my contact info in the process which is infuriating! This was a few hours before the posts above were made about flashing to 1.21 with the goldcard already inserted

I don't know if it's worth bothering with the update now? I haven't found a decent backup solution for the phone yet and I don't want to spend hours restoring everything again (I've already done two restores in the three weeks I've owned the phone). I find it appalling design by Google how updating the phone firmware wipes everything - is that not like losing all your applications, settings and documents every time you apply a new service pack to Windows!? And that's compounded by the fact that there don't seem to be any straightforward complete backup to computer solutions available (please correct me if I'm wrong) - I have a decent backup regime for my own computer and I'm not prepared to fork out for some company to give me storage space on their cloud servers, I think that's completely unnecessary!

Don't forget that you altered your phone from the way HTC supplied it, so they can't be held responsible if the unexpected happens.

Have you tried MyBackup Pro? You can backup everything either online or to the SD card. From there, you can copy it to your PC.

Updating to a standard unaltered phone doesn't wipe anything. If you choose to customise your phone, you must accept that the unexpected can happen.

I sympathise with you, and I know how frustrating it can be; I've customised stuff myself, and have learnt the hard way not to change anything I rely on.

Ah, I was under the impression that updating the firmware would still have wiped everything even if I hadn't debranded - that's fair enough if that's not the case!

I had tried the free version of MyBackup but wanted to test that a full backup/restore of apps and data actually worked before forking out for the Pro version. It turns out that you don't get enough space with the free version to do that so what I'm probably going to do instead is root my phone, update the firmware to 1.21 in the process and then get Titanium Backup on there. It'll be another evening (maybe more) gone but hopefully it'll save time and effort in the long run...

I wish i hadn't updated now, battery has gone shocking, took it off charge and within 25mins it had dropped to 89%, hasn't even used it, I used to get 36-48hrs off a charge now only get 24hrs

I wish the same. The battery lasts 30% less than before the update.

Yeah t-mobile is good to go. Had to do a manual check. Updating now.

  20. I have noticed that it takes forever indeed to get a GPS fix. I used to get a GPS fix inside the house under 5 minutes (so it's always been slow for me, mind). But it now takes ages for it outside as well.

I use GPS mainly with Google My Tracks to record my bike rides. Since I am just about so set of one, I'll let you know in about 1-2 hours how that went.

I don't have too high hopes. Luckily I am not highly dependent on the GPS to record my tracks, but still it's nice to show where I have been. ;)

    Hi All

Long time lurker (well, since april when I ordered my desire) first time poster.

Just confirming the T-Mobile version of the patch, had to power off/on my phone and do a manual check for updates and it found it. Took about 5 mins tops via wifi to do the update - version now showing as if that's of any use/meaning to anyone. It very nicely did a backup of my stuff before and offered to restore when the update was complete, all looking initially happy and healthy.

    Off to have a play.

I did T-Mobile update and it failed in backing up my data so I ended up losing few stuff but not a major issue, just an inconvenience.

Will see how it goes now.

GPS used to connect quick indoors, still not connected after 3 mins. LOL connected just as I posted.

Another good t-mobile update here. Manual check and all fine, all data restored and can't really see any difference! Runs a bit quicker and GPS still slow, but was like that before.
