Hey so i'm a bit out of it when it comes to phones because i absolutely LOooooooved my desire HD so haven't been keeping up with things... And that latest update that came out for it was so cool (the 3d slides).

ANyway, It makes sense to upgrade my phone and I am looking fairly seriously at the Samsung Galaxy s2 (the s1 I didn't like for a number of reasons but the s2 seems very solid). Can i change the OS easily or can i get a theme for it so it's 3d, as opposed to the boring, iphone-like interface?

Also are there any other comparable phones on the market at the moment with the same sized screen?

    Thanks a heap

Go for one of the Sensations. Faster phone, similar build and interface. :)

Ahh ok thanks, didn't realise the screen size was the same, i'll look into it, read some reviews, prices etc, tad ugly is the only problem, the samsung s2 is beautiful

Is there any themes perhaps that you can download for the galaxy s2 that are 3d and resemble in any way the new themes on the desire HD?

You could try some of the launchers like ADW, Go Launcher etc. They have some pretty nice transitions & you can download some acceptable sense replacement widgets. You may need to pay for some of them though.

ahh ok cool, I'm probably going to with the sensation (partially because I like the aluminium back too) BUT I read earlier that it might not run on 900mhz and instead runs on 850mhz. Whereas optus runs 900... so this means I'll get bad reception (I'm very happy with optus)

    Cheers

No chance of getting your phone back using Sense tracking? Hope

ah that's pretty damn cool, phone is now locked, with a message offering a reward for it's return... so assuming the guy who stole it (some random in thailand) sold it to some tourist, I've offered a reward for it's return and we'll see what haps...

    Thx for the info.

I bought a SGS2... Just couldn't bring myself to buy the sensation, the sgs2 just looked so much better and I thought i'd try a different interface etc.. Performance wise it's great, but the UI SUCCCKKKKSSS compared to sense, i really, really miss it.. Have to download all these apps and widgets to get it looking like my old phone came standard and it still doesn't all mesh in nicely... Oh well

    Turn coat :p

Yeah, the SGS2 is a really nice phone, ruined by the UI (same with all Samsungs unfortunately).

Yeh... Shouldn't have done it but It was just weird going from a desire HD to the sensation, which wasn't a big step, and would basically see me having the same phone for at least another 24 months...

I never weighed UI into the equation that much, as long as I have read that it's lag free etc ... But Sense to Samsung is just painful, considering how beefed up all the phones are that are coming out atm, spec wise, i'd recommend people start looking at the UI more than they do specs!

Cmonnnn XDA with a Sense port for sgs2.....

Fair comment, even without rooting it's pretty easy to change the UI so it's not that big an issue.

If I was going to go for another HTC, I'd want something totally different style wise OR something much higher spec. DHD-> Sensation wouldn't be a big enough jump.

Mate of mine has just taken delivery of a SGS2 and to be fair it looks absolutley stunning. Was thinking about picking one up, but this crappy UI chat is putting me off slightly. What's so gash about it?

I'm not a massive Sense fan, but I know that it's better than Samsung's offering!

Best would be to try getting in to a shop to have a little play with it or, if you've got friends who have the SGS II, ask if you can have a play...

I didn't like Sense after a while, got bored of it and it was a big change from vanilla android so i thought i was missing out on the proper android experience. Sense does have some very good features though.

Anyway after my dad got an SII i appreciated Sense a lot more. The touchwiz stuff is horrendous. I'm glad that Google have forced all manufacturers to offer a vanilla themed UI alongside their own with the ICS rollout. So when the SII ICS update does come out you will get the choice of themes.

Its a great phone so I would definitely suggest getting a launcher instead of putting up with the current UI.

Hadn't realised that google were doing that... at least you get the choice, without having to root!

Yeh, I'm rooted (Telstra branded phone... had to remove the crap) but didn't want to go messing around with a brand new phone changing UI's and such.. Never had to root my old DHD so was hoping I wouldn't have to this time.. Oh well... Yup, i'm holding out for ICS too now, although I've heard mixed reports about it... with the last few updates from Sense The phone was getting so damned good, all the new widgets and even the recent programs list in the drop down just made everything so easy... Touchwiz feels like a bunch of different programs forced to work together
