    Hi,

I know it has been asked a thousand times but would just like to ask if there are a few specifics to putting CM7 on a Desire HD

I have just put CM7 on std Desire and it is very good, but this benefits from Gingerbread, extra speed, and most of all memory access, so without doubt well worth it.

The HD however I think is actually pretty fast anyway, rarely notice any lag, memory has been fine so far, not a hint of running low. Gingerbread offers some improvement and generally a cool android experience.

I do love to customize & fiddle and really want to ROOT & ROM but not exactly sure why. (I also like some stability, fine when I have time to fix but sometimes I just need things to work.)

One big Question is with CM7 or any custom ROM has the ability for a program like Tasker to close down another app. Specifally I have a Car dock app that on BT connection with my car loads navigation & a seperate speed camera app. On BT disconnect it can close the docking but unable to close the 3rd party app. I think Froyo brought in this blocking i believe for security.
May seem a small thing but is annoying.

Also just to clarify, (perhaps I ought to understand if I am thinking of rooting)
What exactly is being downgraded to allow root? And does the custom ROM replace/upgrade this.
i.e. does this old firmware remain and the custom Rom work over the top or replace.
The upgrade to 2.50 firmware DID help my WiFi. How is this Firmware different from the whole ROM thing?

If I did return to original HTC ROM for warranty etc. I am guessing it would then get OTA upgrade back to the 2.50 stuff.

I am not sure if mine is Vodafone carrier locked, came from a online company but I thought affilated to vodafone but no splash screens or mention on About/Software so not sure what RRU i would need.
Will I still need the goldcard stuff to downgrade?
I will read info again but just came to mind.

    Thanks I/A

you only need a goldcard if you phone is network branded

usually from 3rd party stores etc the phones are not branded as they are not being sold form the network

I am guessing it will be just a standard HTC rom

maybe post a screen shot or type the information in the about software page and someone will be able to tell you exactly what rom it is

From your software info page, what's your software version? If it looks something like this "2.50.405.2" then you're not branded and won't need a gold card.

All apps that work with the standard ROM (apart from the Sense apps) will work with CM7 so you'll be fine with Tasker. Generally speaking, most apps available via the market will work fine.

And returning to a stock ROM is a relatively easy process should you need to return your phone for warranty purposes.

    Hi,
    Thank you for both replys,

What I was getting at with the tasker thing was, more recent versions of the offical android, I think 2.2 onwards, prevented tasker or any similar program from closing/shutting down an app automatically, it requires physical intervention from the user.

I wondered if custom roms had put this ability back in?

    Unless I am missing something.

Someone put it much better than me:-
Starting with Android 2.2 "Froyo", Google has revoked the api necessary to kill an app. That api is now private and any app can only be killed through system settings.

Most of time not a problem I guess but somthing like sat nav using GPS needs to be switched off.

    Thanks again.

I know there were certain things google stopped 3rd Party apps doing in 2.3, but I didn't realise the ability to close something was?

I'll have a mess about with it if I get the chance to at work this evening.

I'm running a MIUI rom rather than cyanogen, but it's still a 2.3 based rom. I set tasker up to kill an app and it wouldn't work. I then went back into tasker and told it to kill the app via root methods and it worked perfectly.

So chances are that the API being revoked doesn't matter if you have root privileges, which you would have on CM7.

    Hi,
    Thanks again for follow ups,

going back to one of my first questions,

to return to UK OEM HTC Desire unbranded ROM, I believe there is only a RUU 2.37
If this is installed, will I then later get OTA unpgrades that will eventually take me back to 2.50.

    Thanks I/A

There's a load of RUU's here. To return to stock, you'll need to run the 1.32.405.6 RUU, temp root with visionary, get S-ON and you're back to factory state.

You should also be able to accept the OTA updates too.
