Hey everyone. New here. Please help me, I can't seem to access my developer options. I go to build number and tap 7 times and this is what I see after ther first tap
"No need, developer options already enabled"

When I go back to my settings page I can see developer options there but when I click it, it says "Turn on developer options first"

When you tap on the Developers Options menu, is there a 'On' option at the top that you can toggle on/off? It sounds like even though Developers Options itself has been enabled that you at some point either intentionally or inadvertently later just turned it off.

When I tap on developers options it wont even take me into the developers options menu. It pops up with "Turn on Developer Options First" in a bubble overlay.

Thank you, however I'm a little bit nervous to give my developer option permissions over to a third party app. If I can't find a solution I may try it though.

The same app is available on Google PlayStore, according to where I got the info.

I don't trust Google myself, so that is why I posted the link from UpToDown.

The point is just to see if you can open the developers options and tick the switch to turn it on.

After that, you wont need the extra app anymore anyway.

If you are that paranoid, turn off your mobile data and Wi-Fi while you try out the app and see if it can get your developers options on.

Well, I tried it, downloaded and installed the apk, went to click on the icon and got the exact same message as when I click on my devices' developer options. "Turn on Developer Options first"

Well, it seems that your device is blocking it somehow.
Is this a new or used phone?
Did it come from somewhere like Rent A Center?

The thread on xda mentioned trouble with these devices from there.
It also showed how to identify the ones that come from there.

I dont remember if you have tried restarting the device and if that doesnt work trying a factory reset.

Restarting is simple and wont lose data, while a factory reset will place the phone back into its default condition- you will lose all data.

Might I ask what the importance of the developers options is to you?

Sure, there are some neat things in there, but generally for the masses they tend to be couriosities.

I like the 'show taps' feature, and also change the window, transition, and animation times.
I also use the mock location feature.

Other than that there is not much more that I personally can use to my advantage, although some do hold some interest.

Just a stab in the dark but try booting into safe mode and then try Developer Options.

If you have "My Knox" force stop clear data and uninstall or disable. Set permissions to off if disabling. Reboot and check if your Developer Options are accessible.

    -I got the phone new
    - I got my phone from my mobile carrier, Virgin Mobile, presumably from Samsung. I see no indication it came from Rent A Center.
    - I have tried restarting the phone to no avail. Factory reset will be my last option, as I will have to transfer all my data first
    - I am looking to access a saved wifi password from my phone without rooting. It is not the wifi that I am currently on. I read in a thread that I can access the data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file using adb with developer options and and usb debugging enabled. I am not looking to root this particular device.

Yes, you are 100% correct @uberkamp , usb must be enabled to use android debugging bridge. I'm guessing its some kind of system security feature. I'll see if I can find some more info.

Also some carriers have the options locked so you can't change them. If you are in the Usa Virgin runs off of Sprint towers. And iirc most of their phones the options are now locked.

Interesting. I am in Canada. Do you know if it's the same here? I'd rather not have to factory reset only to get the same results

Your Welcome, with one of my Samsungs an OTA update greyed out my APN's. In order to open and edit I had to downgrade the firmware.
Hopefully, that not necessary with your S7.

In Canada they use Bell towers. So I am not sure if it's the same.

As far as I know, you cannot retrieve stored Wi-Fi passwords unless the device is rooted.

And I also have a Sprint device, but where I am (BFE, Indiana) Sprint is using CDMA towers owned by Verizon.
So without looking it up I don't remember what system or towers Virgin Mobile uses around me.

But my phone is a goofball, as it appears to have both GSM and CDMA capability.

The majority of the threads that I have read would agree with you, that you cannot retrieve stored Wi-Fi passwords without root, however I have a thread bookmarked where one user explicity explains how to do it with usb debugging and adb set to root access. I cannot speak to whether it works or not, but I was willing to give it a shot. Still haven't figured out my developer options issue though. :(

I am veing to feel your frustration. The lack of info pertaining to your specific device, firmware and developer options doesn't provide useful results. I hope your not locked on a higher aboot (fused version) which will prevent downgrading. I'm not even sure if downgrading will solve the issue. Googling doesn't provide the answers. Factor rest is a pain in the ..... If you try it just remember your Google password if you do since youll face FRP lock upon reboot. I do remember one of my Sammy's had a knox in setting that asked permission to prevent root or unauthorized modification in the phone settings. :(
