Hi all, I lost my S7 Edge and bought a new one yesterday. I have since realized that there is one very important function that my original S7 Edge could do, but that this one can't:

You know how in the dialer app you can input the first few letters of contacts name and the people whose names have these letters pop up for you to choose? Well I have many Chinese contacts whose names are saved in Chinese characters. Before I could dial the corresponding pinyin letters in the dialer app and the Chinese contacts would pop up(dial w-a-n-g and people with 王 in their names pop up), but now it doesn't. Pinky English names show up. This is quite frustrating as it takes a lot longer to go into the address book each time to find the contact.

2 identical phones should have the identical features though right? The only thing i can think is I bought the first one in Taiwan, and the second one in Vietnam.

    Any ideas?

ROM versions are different and localized to the country. Taiwan, Chinese is the main language of course. Vietnam, not so. That's just a guess. If you can flash the Taiwan ROM to a Vietnam Samsung, possibly, exact method I wouldn't know off hand.

I'm mostly familiar with PRC version phones, and they have no problem with pinyin contact dialler lookup.

You could try a different, third-party dialler app, that might solve the problem. One that has pinyin contact search.

    EDIT:

There's nothing in the S7 settings is there, about pinyin lookup, ON or OFF?

OK, before we go invalidating the Samsung warranty. Have a search on Google Play for "pinyin dialer". There's quite a few to try, and see if one works for you.

Would that invalidate it? I saw on Sammobile.all they provide other regions firmware. For dinner reason though they don't have Taiwan China, or the Chinese speaking region as an option.

I've just tried the first few search results for the query you suggested and none were able to do Pinyin dialer look-up, even though one said that it could. Furthermore I none were as aesthetically nice as the stock dialer.

What would you suggest I do?

It's an S7, latest phone from Samsung, and I believe they lock them down pretty tightly these days. There's Knox, to ensure that only authorized software can boot on it, and attempting to defeat Knox trips a non-resettable e-fuse. Which shows on a "warranty void" counter in device information, and brings the device status to "custom".

If wish to change the ROM, there's our All Things Root forum for S7 and S7 Edge.
